Port of Vigo (Protection versus Safety)
SECURITY VERSUS SAFETY

This distinction comes from the Anglo-Saxon concepts of Safety and Security. However, traditionally, in the Hispanic-speaking countries both were translated as SAFETY, referring this same concept to two very different application fields.

Therefore, in spanish, SAFETY refers to those matters relating to industrial safety, occupational safety, technological hazards, dangerous goods, etc., while SECURITY is  reserved for issues in ports related with the implementation of the ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code), promoted by the Maritime Safety Committee of IMO (International Maritime Organisation) in 2004, against the risks arising from antisocial acts (terrorism, basically).

In this section, and for both concepts, is set out the organization, material and human resources, procedures to follow in the normal course of operations and performance protocols for abnormal situations; all of this information oriented to  the Port User and therefore with a limited scope, given the confidentiality and sensitivity of this information.

Regarding SECURITY, the Port of Vigo fulfills with all existing international rules and, thus far, enjoys of significant safety standards, recognized by global shipowners, after several audits conducted by some of those. The Comprehensive Protection Plan Port has been implemented and is rigorously applied by highly skilled personnel.

In the field of INDUSTRIAL SAFETY AND PREVENTION OF OCCUPATIONAL RISKS -SAFETY-, the Port developes a strong work of coordination of the whole complex network of companies and activities that develop in the service area. The Emergency Plan is updated and its implementation is continuously improved through the simulation program. At the level of occupational risks, in addition to the corresponding prevention plans, it is noteworthy the obtaining of the prestigious OHSAS 18001-2007 CERTIFICATION in the field of its own management of the Port Authority.
